A "Globemaster" for Berlin

On August 17, 1948, the C-74, 42-65414 of the 521st Military Air Transport Group (MATG) landed in Berlin-Gatow for the first time. This aircraft and its crew transported 20,362kg of flour into the blockaded city. At the end of their 6-week special mission, the crew of this "Globemaster" had delivered 559,742kg of supplies to the city in 24 flights. Only 14 units of this aircraft type were built, but it played a crucial role in supplying the enclosed city. The largest and heaviest transport aircraft of the US Air Force at that time provided a fascinating spectacle for the young Berliners with their cargo lift.
