The first flight to Tegel airfield

On 16 November 1948, an RAF Dakota of 30 Squadron made the first transport flight into Berlin’s recently-completed Tegel airfield. The Dakota was carrying a load of tractor tyres, cooking oil and condensed milk. Although the aircraft was able to land, facilities for loading and unloading were still lacking. This was soon corrected and Tegel added important extra capacity to the airlift.
