The Millionth Ton

On 18th February 1949 an Avro York of 59 Squadron RAF landed in Berlin. It was carrying the millionth ton of supplies to be brought into the city by air since the start of the Soviet blockade. The crew, Squadron Leader Best, Flying Officer Jeffrey and Signaller Fulkner, were accompanied by the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief British Air Forces of Occupation, Air Marshal Sir Thomas Melling Williams. A ‘1,000,000 tons’ banner was displayed to mark the occasion.
