Tragic series of fatal accidents in January 1949

A total of 22 fatalities! This was the terrible outcome of four plane crashes in January 1949. The successes achieved in terms of tonnage flown – even during the winter months – came at a high price. On 7 January, a US plane crashed during a maintenance flight on its way to England/Burtonwood. Other accidents followed close to Frankfurt/Main on 12 January and near Faßberg on 18 January. All three crashed machines were C-54 Skymasters.

However, the British also suffered casualties. Four people lost their lives in a collision between an RAF Hastings and a service vehicle on the Schleswigland airstrip on 15 January. On 24 January, a British Dakota crashed in the Soviet occupied zone on its way from Berlin to Lübeck. This time private passengers were also among the 8 dead.
