To prepare West Berlin for the upcoming winter, the Royal Air Force mobilized all available civilian and military transport aircraft for flight operations to Berlin-Gatow. On October 5, 1948, all twin-engine civilian charter aircraft were relocated from Lübeck to Hamburg, and flight processes and procedures were further standardized. As a result, on October 7th, the RAF achieved a new daily record of 442 short tons (equivalent to 400,976 kilograms), which they flew into the besieged Berlin via Gatow.
